Discover all the participants to the VOLUMES Book Award 2023!
This year, three prizes are decided by the public through online voting and one is selected by VOLUMES, to support an under the radar publication produced with small means.
With this fourth book award VOLUMES wants to follow up on the initiative started in 2020, highlighting and supporting publications produced worldwide by artists and independent publishers in the last 12 months. All publications will then join the VOLLUMES archive and will keep on being activated and showcased through curated selections.
La Dépendance - Drawings for la Dépendance
Drawings for la Dépendance is an analog crowdfunding project created to finance the purchase of the house. The goal is to collect 35 000 works on paper, which is the price of the house. All works are produced in postcard format (A6). Afterwards they are displayed in a series of exhibitions and bound into book editions. Each work is sold for 1 CHF. A table to draw as well as selection of the collection will be on display at Volumes.
Jan van Oordt was born in Zürich, Switzerland in 1980. After completing his studies in fine arts BA, he moved to the village St.Imier (CH).. There he founded the seasonal artspace and residencyprogram "La Dépendance" in 2018, which he directs ever since. In 2019 he completed his studies MA at the Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN) in Basel. His practice has evolved along various medias with a focus on video and installation in his earlier career. In recent works there is a turn towards immersive mixed media installations with a strong interest assemblages where single parts of the installation function in themselves as well as in the spacial arrangement of their display. Drawing, sculpture, painting, photography and sound are intertwined in the recurring themes of his work that orbits around the questioning of the nature/culture divide, notions of agency in human and non human fabrics, as well as modes and subjective standpoints of noticing.

Bérénice Serra - Sunsettings
As far back as 2500 BC, Stonehenge's architecture was deliberately crafted to mark the occurrences of the summer and winter solstices. This ancient site stands as a testament to the extraordinary astronomical knowledge possessed by its builders. In today's world, technology has opened up new possibilities. Software applications capable of precisely analyzing the sun's position in images have revolutionized how we date and geolocate scenes. This approach plays a vital role in open-source investigations (OSINT), where understanding the timing and location of events can be pivotal in uncovering valuable information. Sunsettings is both an exhibition and a publication that explores a visual language enabling us to trace the history of solar theories and contemplate their potential in our connected world.
Bérénice Serra is a media artist and researcher based in Zürich (CH).
She is currently Guest Professor at the Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW.
She develops both artistic and theoretical projects that question the modes of conception, production and exchange of cultural forms in the digital age. By collecting user-generated images, designing hybrid books with the languages of the web and curating wild exhibitions with smartphones, she is essentially interested in the problem of publication — how contents go public.

Racled - The Racled corner
The Racled corner
For their second participation at Volumes, Zurich-based collective Racled invites you to the screen printing atelier of the Zentralwäscherei, where they will display the editions they produced during the past year, in collaboration with five artists. A selection of books produced by the artists will also be exhibited.
Racled invites you to print with them! On Saturday and Sunday, between 15:00 and 16:00, Racled will do a printing action – come get a hand-printed gift wrap or print it yourself if you feel curious to try something new! It will be possible to print on other paper formats too.
When: Saturday, 18.11, 15:00 - 16:00h
Sunday, 19.11, 15:00 - 16:00h
How: No booking – first come first served
Racled is an edition art project connecting emerging Swiss based art practitioners and the screen-printing technique. Artists and designers are directly invited to work at the studio together to develop the final artwork, exploring pigments, layers, materials. The project aims to be an exchange: most of the artists never worked directly with the screen-printing medium.
Each edition features the same price and format, regardless of the subject or the notoriety of the artists. The small edition of 45 makes the prints rare enough to be considered a collector's item while at the same breaking the pattern of economic inaccessibility to artworks.

BLOW UP PRESS - Eternal U
Eternal U by Hubert Humka
Eternal U is a story about the so-called good death and eternity. Through photographs of forests being natural cemeteries where the dead are buried in biodegradable coffins, marked only with a previously selected tree, Humka shows a certain way of thinking about us as a code, an immortal chain of some larger universe. During life, we all draw from it, to later give it a part of ourselves.
“In each of these places, the forest itself, giving eternal rest to the people buried there, was the most important element for me,” - says Hubert Humka. - “There I photographed the soil in which they rested and the bark of the trees they became. I like to think that the roots of these trees, drawing from the people buried under them, include them in their existence, that nothing ends, that it is only our human self that changes. We become a tree, a forest, part of something bigger that reaches beyond us. We connect with the universe, we become infinite.”
The book was created in the spirit of sustainable development, respect for the world and the surrounding nature, on ecological recycled papers. Its main axis are photographs of the forest, accompanied by negative modifications and embossed text about leaving. The graphic techniques used symbolise the perception of the world from the other side and the trace we leave behind.
Hubert Humka (b. 1983) | based in Paris, France | graduate of and lecturer at the Lodz Film School’s Photography Faculty | interested in mockumentary and searching for authenticity in photography | his works have been exhibited during numerous international photo festivals, including Les Rencontres d’Arles (2012 and 2013), Transphotographiques (2014), Fotofestiwal Lodz (2016) and Bialystok Interphoto Festival (2015), among others | finalist of Prix Voies Off Sélections 2013 at the Les Rencontres d’Arles Off Festival (France) and Photo Diploma Award 2013 (Poland) | author of the books: Evil Man (Lodz Film School Press, 2014), Death Landscapes (BLOW UP PRESS, 2018; recognised as the Best Photographic Publication in Poland in 2018 by the Fotopolis & Digital Camera Polska plebiscite and nominated to the Prix Bob Calle du livre d’artiste, Paris, France, 2019), and Eternal U (BLOW UP PRESS, 2023).

Have a nice day press - Poems Sneaking Through a Sieve
On the occasion of VOLUMES Art Publishing Days 2023, Have a Nice Day Press co-founder Lele Buonerba will present Poems Sneaking Through a Sieve, the first artist book by Riley Cavanaugh, published by the press in 2022. This publication bridges gaps between artist book, monograph, sketchbook, and collection of materials gathered on the Internet; screenshots of CAPTCHA prompts and spam emails collected between 2018–2021 are the inexhaustible source material for the two bodies of work which act as the publication’s foundation. The presentation will include a reading from Nina Wexelblatt's essay FWD: You’re On Our Radar!, which acts as a bookend to the publication.
Founded by Lele Buonerba and Laurel Hauge in 2019, Have a Nice Day Press develops and publishes books, editions, and ephemera by artists whose work is informed by Internet culture and digital life.

suppergìu magazine - CRANI SCIOLTI Sieropositivo
'Sieropositivo' (yes, I was positive), born in autumn 2022 as suppergiù's younger sister, is a fanzine dedicated to negative entertainment. Conceived by suppergìu magazine in collaboration with the CRANI SCIOLTI collective, this zine collects drawings, comics, photographs, and texts dedicated to black humor and cynical irony.
SIEROPOSITIVO 4 delves into the realm of BLACK HUMOR. This fourth installment of our fanzine revels in its distinctive identity with a touch of madness, employing four distinct printing techniques — silkscreen, digital, offset, and risoprint — as if extending an invitation to chaos in the midst of a meticulously choreographed masquerade. The absence of black ink, symbolizing a world where roles are delightfully reversed, heightens the unpredictability of this artistic odyssey, where irreverence thrives.
The format remains A3, with leading pages and a total of 56 pages.

Itinerante - Libros y encuentros
Itinerante is a recently launched project that promotes literature in Spanish through events and workshops. It focuses on the activation of rescued or second-hand books, which had their fate in the rubbish or were forgotten in the corner of a library, so that they come out of oblivion and can have a second reading life. For VOLUMES’s Art Publishing Days we will weave a network that links different books with activities we are carrying out. In this web, literature, theater, embroidery and writing will be connected with books by different authors, photos and other elements. Through this network we want not only to present our project but also to show that the act of reading can take different forms, and that it can be shared, collective and performative.
Itinerante is a project founded and carried out by Agustina Atrio and Virginia Kargachin. Agustina Atrio is a cultural organizer and writer from Argentina. She is currently doing a Master in Literary Studies at the University of Zurich, works at MAXIM Theater, and carries out different cultural projects. Virginia Kargachin is an English teacher and cultural mediator. She has a MA in Literary Studies, works for the project Weiter Schreiben Schweiz at artlink and enjoys organizing reading and literary events in Zurich.

Vexer Verlag - Lesung von Judith Keller
Judith Keller

Studio Violatipia - Book as (is) an object
A book as a bridge to connect reader and author, a book could communicate. A book related to printmaking, typography, photography, paper choose and book binding. Book as (is) an object. I changed reading way with books. Books as an object, as an item, to show materials and how to play a book with different vision. Each page has own identity. It could be connected also could be separated. Those books will be illegible and unreadable to push reader to discover different materials.
Studio Violatipia started on 28 may 2022 by Tzu Ning Chiang (Viola Chiang) is an experimental lab between printmaking and alternative photography, also a publishing house. Located in Fondamenta San Giacomo, Venice, Italy

HumDrumPress - An Experiment in Publishing as a Commons
Through our publishing model, and pamphlet publications, we are experimenting with three main areas: 1. Testing the potential for publishing as a commons, 2. Understanding how the process of publishing can become more transparent, convivial and accessible and 3. Challenging the status of the publication as solely an “object” to allow for non-linear, cyclical publishing processes to emerge, that mean the publication and the knowledge it holds can be re-activated again and again. For "HumDrumPress: An Experiment in Publishing as a Commons”, we will present our work-in-constant-process Manifesto & Manual for Publishing the HumDrumWay as well as our most recent publication “Qualities of Collective Learning” by topsoil collective, to share insights into our learnings and the process behind our experiments in publishing as a commons, and the ways in which our findings have permeated directly into our publication formats.
HumDrumPress is an experimental publishing project and expanded publishing practice that works, through collaborative means, to question the conventions of publishing. At the heart of HumDrumPress is the understanding of publishing as a commons, and as a public, community resource. Our publishing project is therefore shaped and shared by our network of collaborating individuals, organisations, and institutions. HumDrumPress’ publishing projects take the form of both print and digital pamphlet-style-publications. We publish with a broad range of authors around subject matters with a wide scope of disciplines, backgrounds and experiences. Some of whom are publishing for the first time, whilst others are seasoned writers, but all are connected in their interest in the ideas and methods surrounding “commons” and/or “commoning”.

Mahjong Friends - Mahjong : an International Workshop
Mahjong is a board game that encapsulates the rich history and cultural traditions of East Asia. Invented in China approximately 150 years ago, it has gained popularity among people in many regions of the world. Due to the cultural and geographical isolation in the process of Mahjong’s transmission, different countries and regions (e.g. Taiwan, Hong Kong, various regions of China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, etc.) have their own diverse Mahjong rules, but because all the different rules are relatively easy to interchange, people who know Mahjong - though having different language, cultural and ideological backgrounds - could sit down and play the game together: on the Mahjong table, those conflicts, nationalities, political positions, problems, ideologies, struggles - reached a common ground. Mahjong thus becomes the situation/place where people meet, communicate, exchange, and make friends. "Mahjong : an international workshop" is a brief introduction to the history of mahjong and also the rules of it - we will go through the symbols and meanings of the tiles and explain how the game goes. There will be a set of mahjong and everyone is welcome to join and play!
Mahjong Friends is an artist collective fascinated, inspired and united by Mahjong - the beloved mysterious board game from East Asia. By doing artistic research, murals, video, installations, organizing workshops and making publications, we aim to bring more people to the Mahjong table.

URBAN LAMENT
Collective Expressions of Pain, Rage, and Affection
published by kyklàda.press, 2023
two of the authors, Lydia Xynogala and David Bergé will be signing
Lamentation practices can empower the potentiality to defy patriarchal orders ruling everyday life. Always a collective process, lamentation inscribes loss and vulnerability by tending bridges towards the world of the dead and the more-than-human. Gestures such as singing or breathing, gathering, and performances that exceed rationality can inspire a renewed approach to life and death, rural and urban. After all, amidst ongoing processes of extinction, how to mourn a queer activist, a Roma father, a burnt forest, an exiled body, and a ship sunken in the Mediterranean? How to experience loss not as something individual, but within an expanded continuum of pain? How to explore emotions beyond the private sphere? Through case studies and narrations, in different times and geographies surrounding the Aegean Sea, this book amplifies the echoes of collective tears to invigorate contemporary mourning practices that claim public space by grief, rage, and affect.
